Some key strategies Kimberly discussed for prioritizing self-care and managing energy levels as parent carers during the holidays include:
-
Using the Spoon Theory to pace yourself and prioritize activities. Acknowledge that it's okay to say no and push plans into January if needed.
-
Doing regular body scans to check in on your physical and emotional state. Using tools like ice packs can help manage physiological symptoms of stress.
-
Ensuring you have self-care in multiple areas - social, emotional, sensory, etc. Don't just focus on sleep and rest.
-
Building in breaks and recovery time, even if it's just 5 minutes hiding in the bathroom. Recognize when you need to recharge.
-
Communicating your needs clearly to family and friends. Don't be afraid to set boundaries and manage expectations around visits/events.
The key is being kind to yourself, adjusting plans as needed, and prioritizing your own wellbeing alongside supporting your family. Pacing and self-care are crucial during this busy time.
