CAMHS NDC: Moving into Adulthood
We’re pleased to share insights from our recent webinar, “Moving into Adulthood: Supporting Neurodivergent Young People.” This session was designed to help parent carers better understand the significant transitions that occur around the age of 18 for autistic and ADHD young people, and to explore how best to support them through this important stage of life.
Hosted in collaboration between the Oxfordshire Parent Carers Forum (OxPCF) and the CAMHS Neurodevelopmental Pathway Team, the session featured Dr James Stacey (Consultant Clinical Psychologist, NDC Pathway) and Laura Agnew (Nursing and Allied Health Professional Clinical Lead). Together, they shared expert perspectives on planning for independence, navigating adult services, and addressing the emotional and practical challenges that can arise during this transition.
Key Topics Covered:
• Understanding the legal and social changes that occur at age 18
• Navigating gaps in adult mental health and ADHD medication services
• Preparing for further education, employment, and independent living
• Accessing benefits, social care, and driving support
• Documenting ongoing needs and planning ahead for support continuity
• Exploring non-traditional pathways and promoting autonomy at each young person’s pace
